Position summary
Provide mental health counseling, psychological assessments, and prevention services under the supervision of a licensed counseling or clinical psychologist in a University Counseling Center setting to enhance student well-being within a Christ-centered Seventh-day Adventist learning community.
Qualifications summary
PhD Candidate status
Completed all coursework in PhD Counseling /Clinical Psychology program
Basic generalist skills/competencies in time-limited individual counseling, group psychotherapy, outreach/consultation, and crisis intervention
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
- Provide time-limited individual counseling, group psychotherapy, outreach/consultation, and crisis intervention
- Conduct psychological assessments to aid in diagnostic clarification (includes ADHD assessments)
- Assist with outreach prevention programming / screening activities for university student population.
- Assist with the provision of clinical supervision & professional development of master’s level counseling interns
- Participate in internal research
- Participate in professional development activities (including completing assigned trainings, conducting mental health presentations and case presentations) and weekly staff meetings.
- Complete clinical documentation in a timely manner. Maintain clinical records and provide clinical documentation and communication with in-house and external practitioners as necessary for ethical clinical treatment
- Develop leadership in the offering of prevention educational experiences for students (ie. Substance use & Anger Management psycho-educational classes, support / skills building groups).
- Collaborate with other campus departments, including the Wellness Dept. in the coordination of awareness programming throughout the year (i.e. Annual Thrive Mental Health Symposium, Depression Awareness, Eating Disorder Awareness, Substance Abuse Awareness months, etc.)
- Collaborate with Student life, Residence Hall Deans, School of Health Professions, and other campus departments in the offering of outreach programming, including Tuesday Choices, annual Wellness Fair, and Residence Hall mental health presentations
- Create and maintain collaborative relationships, communication and outreach methods with collegiate colleagues to effectively facilitate retention efforts and service students.
- Assist faculty with students who are experiencing difficulties relating to personal, vocational and academic concerns or related educational issues.
- Coordinate need assessments and other assessments as needed.
- Participate in all weekly supervisory activities
- Perform related responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or designee.
Supervisory responsibilities
Provide supervision to master’s level interns in projects related to campus wide prevention
Facilitate peer consultation group as assigned
Qualifications
- Completion of all coursework in Master’s program and Doctoral program in counseling or clinical psychology from an accredited academic institution
- Basic generalist skills/competencies in time-limited individual counseling, group psychotherapy, outreach/consultation, and crisis intervention
- Preferred experience in college mental health services
- Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory
- Commitment to working collaboratively within the Student Life Division, establishing and maintaining close working relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators
- Previous work with a diverse student population preferred
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Technical competencies
Able to use basic Microsoft Office tools including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Able and willing to learn internal electronic record system (Titanium)
Interpersonal interactions
Must be comfortable interacting with students in therapeutic role.
Must be able to clearly communicate and work within a university setting.
Physical demands
Must be able to respond to urgent crisis situations. Must be able to physically move throughout campus in the delivery of prevention programming. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or listen. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, or stoop. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Work environment
The Counseling & Testing Center is a vibrant mental health agency within a university setting. The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate. There are no particular facility hazards. Occasionally, there are weekends and irregular hours. Physical work environment is within the parameters of university setting expectations.
